How do we transform destruction into disruption?

This October 21-28, Houston's tech community unites to bring you THIS: The Houston Innovation Summit. Launched as an annual event for Houston innovators to connect, ideate, create and celebrate together, #THIS17 takes a new spin...

Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath amplified many of Houston's most complex problems. To surface challenges and identify how we can turn them into opportunities for insight, innovation and impact, #THIS17 invites you to participate in discussions, design-thinking sessions, workshops and social events to ignite the problem-solving potential of Houstonians and our innovation ecosystem for long-term recovery.

THIS Day One brings Houston's civic tech and service-based community together for a full day of discovery, discussion, ideation and development.

Led by organizations like Sketch City and Combined Arms, Civic Tech & Community Day features sessions on social sector challenges and design-thinking for high-impact solutions. Join local leaders and tech volunteers to understand Houston's greatest pain points, collaborate on potential solutions, and help shape technology-enabled disaster recovery.

THIS Day Two invites you to re-think entrenched perspectives on energy and health, and imagine new approaches to modern challenges.

We will hear how Writers In The Schools is helping children heal after Harvey, and how Texas Medical Center institutions leveraged telemedicine to help stranded patients maintain access to doctors during the storm. We will learn ways to build healthy selves and healthy teams. The Houston Angel Network will introduce you to how investors evaluate potential investments, and will share what they look for before investing in energy and health companies. And Kirk Coburn will share how he went from helping clean-tech energy startups launch through SURGE to now helping them scale as Venture Principal at Shell Technology Ventures.

THIS Day Three sparks discussion on how we might move forward from just talking about diversity to actively practicing inclusion and integration.

Monarq will start the day with an Investor + Entrepreneur speed-dating session. Then, JP Morgan and Alice ask you to bring your tough questions and challenging topics to the Diversity and Disruption Unconference. SVB invites you to Bayou Park for lunch and epic volunteering for "Tech Gives Back Houston"; while back at Station, Houston Area Urban League and Leverage lead sessions on how we can support and empower Houston's diverse communities. Mona Loves Gustav and Muvve will explore how inclusion has spurred growth for their startups, followed by MLS' Fall Art Opening and happy hour. Closing the evening is Station's featured monthly event: Houston Startup Demo Day!

THIS Day Four spotlights Houston's creative community, bringing together media mavens, marketers, designers, developers, architects, writers ... and everyone else who thinks outside-the-box and inside-the-brackets.

Award-winning architects will share best practices and ideas on how Houstonians can build sustainably for the future...literally. Focusing on personal and professional development, this day includes hands-on workshops where you will learn how to sound, present, and communicate your best both in person and online. Digital Crafts and Dorton will discuss how to find good talent and how to become good talent, sandwiched between a roundtable and happy hour sponsored by MongoDB.

THIS Day Five brings together Houston's business community and innovation ecosystem to announce special initiatives and discuss how we can spur -- and scale -- local economic development.

We will learn how public-private financing can foster social innovation; and how local groups are accelerating social ventures. The Greater Houston Partnership and its community partners will share exciting new initiatives for the city and introduce the new committees forming to support them, followed by design-thinking roundtables with some of their most forward-thinking leaders.

Get connected! Stay informed.
